Read An RPG Book In Public Week

Read an RPG Book In Public Week occurs three times a year: GM’s Day – March 4, Gary Gygax’s birthday – July 27, and Dave Arneson’s birthday October 1.  Each of the three weeks starts on the Sunday on or before, and ends on the Saturday on or after.

  • March 3-9, 2019.
  • July 21-27, 2019.
  • September 29- October 5, 2019.

This effort was started by The Escapist Blog, operated by RPGAdvocate, not the same as the media site. The Escapist advocates for the positive aspects of RPGs and works against the negative stereotypes and attacks on RPGs and players. Reading an RPG book in public is a quiet way to get the material visible to others in a non-threatening manner. It invites questions and engagement.

Now that D&D and other RPGs are experiencing record growth and popularity, The Escapist ‘s author has not felt the need to be as proactive in fighting the attacks on RPG culture and players.

I think it is still important to promote Read an RPG Book In Public Week each of the three weeks each year. It celebrates GM’s and the co-creators of D&D Dave Arneson and Gary Gygax. Everyone, not just RPG players need to know the origin story of RPGs and D&D.

We may not all agree on the details, but we should not deny that it took both men to bring us the idea of role playing with rules and the game D&D.
